The Children’s background
The majority of the children are Tibetan refugees and those from the remote areas of Nepal like Humla, Jumla, Dolpo, Mugu, Limi, Mustang, Solukhumbu, etc., which borders Tibet and whose inhabitants have a close cultural and religious link with Tibetans. The children, as well as their parents, have to suffer great physical and economic hardships because of the lack of development infrastructures at these areas, such as education, health, transport, communication, employment and resources.
They also suffer because of the difficult topography. These areas lie at a high altitude, the soil is mostly barren and the weather extreme. What little subsistent farming, petty trade and animal husbandry they practice is insufficient even for their daily needs. On top of that Nepal is going through a political and economic crisis that has greatly affected their lives because of their simple way of living and deep religious faith.
